At around 5am Sunday, a huge dust storm completely envelopes the playa. I was at remains of The Man where people were celebrating, dancing, partying and, yes, roasting several hogs. I can only describe the scene as something like a Mad Max post-apocalyptic survivor's camp. In one spot, people were dancing to an art car blasting music and lights. But with the dust so thick, the lights were only visible for a few feet. Closer to the flames, people had divided the hot coals up into smaller piles. Some burners roasted food (such as a hog) while others were sleeping on the dust-covered ground. As the cold wind howled, it competed against the music and chaotic activity. At certain times, the dust was so thick, visibilty turned to zero. When I evenutally returned to camp at 6am, I was completely covered in the white playa dust. We immediately departed Burning Man in absolute white-out conditions. This was my Burning Man baptism of fire.
